Caryopteris is considered a small shrub or sometimes a returning herbaceous plant. This amazingly attractive, environmentally friendly plant requires less water than many, is quite disease and insect resistant and is avoided by deer due to its somewhat unpleasant odor that most gardeners don’t notice unless the leaves are bruised or crushed. Butterflies, on the other hand, consider Caryopteris a treat. Caryopteris (pronounced kar-i-OP-ter-is) is also commonly referred to as Blue Mist Shrub, Bluebeard, Blue Mist spirea or Blue spirea. Its cultivars all have amazing flowers in brilliant hues of blue that rise above grayish- or bluish-green foliage that adds additional interest to your landscape. Its smaller size means that you have many options for placement. Light pruning after each bloom cycle will encourage new growth and more blossoms.
