Vinca Seeds

Vinca seeds are available in both perennial and annual varieties and produce a trailing vine with petite, fanciful blossoms, almost always in hues of pink, lavender, purple or white. The leaves will sometimes be variegated in gold, white, yellow or cream, so Veronica is grown as much for its foliage as for its blossom. This hardy, though quite delicate-looking, vine can smother weeds out and grows well in areas where other ground covers won’t. They thrive in heat and full sun, are drought tolerant, and in some cases will even endure climates with excessive heat, humidity and drenching afternoon rain with ease. Most will also grow in very light shade, though you can expect the flowering to suffer in direct relation to the shade it receives.

Vinca, pronounced VINK-uh, is more commonly known as Madagascar Periwinkle, the botanical name being Catharanthus roseus, pronounced kath-ur-AN-thuss ROE-zee-us, and should not be confused with vinca major or vinca minor, a very similar plant known as creeping myrtle or periwinkle. Madagascar Periwinkle may seem to be a slow grower at first, but patience pays off! If you are fortunate enough to live where you can grow them as a perennial, prune them aggressively in the spring, though not all the way to the ground; a spring pruning will promote new, lusher, bushier growth and encourage more prolific blooming. In perfectly ideal conditions, vinca can become invasive; it may be to your benefit to install a border to keep the vines from going where you don’t want them to, though this is only a warning for those in frost-free zones. Once the spring pruning is done, vinca is pretty much self-cleaning and may only require minimal deadheading.

Though not a heavy feeder, Madagascar Periwinkle, as will all blooming flowers, expends a lot of energy to produce those blossoms, therefore using up the nutrients in their soil quickly, especially when potted. We recommend regular feeding with Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Vinca seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.
