Both perennial and annual poppies need darkness to germinate, but also germinate best when not covered with soil; use paper or light cardboard to cover seed trays or furrows. Keeping the soil uniformly moist and at soil temperatures of around 70°F, the seeds should start sprouting in 14 to 20 days. Remove the covering at that time, move to a sunny location with good air circulation if necessary and continue to keep the soil uniformly moist, but not wet. Extra care should be taken to not disturb the roots while transplanting, this being one of the largest contributors to seedling loss. Another sowing method, largely due to the small size of the seeds, has you preparing the bed with fertile soil, watering it well and then mixing your poppy seeds with sand and broadcasting over the bed, covering them very lightly with sand to provide the needed darkness and then watering very gently. This method provides moisture below the seed but tends to keep the top of the seed dryer, preventing damping off of the seed. Water delicately when needed to keep the bed consistently moist. Thin seedlings when they reach about 5-inches in height, thinning to 8 to 10-inches apart.

We also carry a variety of Perennial Poppy Plants in individual 3” pots.
