Watermelon Plants

Watermelon plants grow sprawling vines that produce edible, juicy fruits that are eaten fresh from the garden. These low calorie vegetables are high in Vitamins A, B6 and C, citrulline, as well as fiber and potassium and contain more lycopene per serving than tomatoes.

Planting your watermelon seedling is very easy, simply remove the plant from the container and place into the soil the same depth that it was in the container. When transplanting use a high phosphorus fertilizer, 30 days later give the plants an application of nitrogen. Then fertilize every other week throughout the growing season with fish emulsion. Watermelons need at least an inch of water. Applying a layer of mulch will help keep the moisture constant and keep the weeds down. Fruits are ready to be harvested when the light green, curly tendrils on the stem near the point of attachment of the melon turn brown and dry and when the surface of the melon becomes dull.
