Lantana Plants

Lantana plants are woody, tropical shrubs with large, rough leaves topped with numerous heads of vividly colored flowers that are highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. They are free-flowering, often blooming from spring right through to the first frost.

Hybridization has improved the Lantana plant, (pronounced lan-TAH-nuh or lan-TAN-uh) the biggest improvements being that today’s hybrids either don’t produce the fruit that previously had to be removed in order for re-blooming to occur, or their seeds are sterile, which keeps them in check. Both improvements have resulted in a much longer blooming season with little care and better containment of the species.

Lantana plants are treated as tender perennial shrubs in the South and as annuals or houseplants in northern climes, though care should be taken if you have pets that enjoy munching on your plants, as this one can make them ill. Lantana enjoys well-drained soil and lots of sun. Once established, Lantanas are quite drought and salt tolerant, making them very popular in the desert southwest and along the southern coasts.
