Amsonia Plants

Amsonia plants, once established, are easy-care native wildflowers. They are drought tolerant and can withstand whole seasons of neglect. They seed sporadically, and therefore do not become invasive, and are often unobtrusive in the wild until the uniquely spectacular fall colors appear. Then you can’t miss them!

Amsonia, pronounced am-SO-nee-ah, is commonly called Blue Star. It was named for Dr. John Amson, an English physician who settled in Virginia in the mid-1700s. This perennial plant is loved by butterflies and avoided by deer. For detailed growing instructions, read How to Grow Amsonia Plants.

The 'Hubrichtii Amsonia' Plant is a little known wild flower that is fast becoming a garden favorite. Pronounced ‘hew-BRIK-tee-eye’, it is more commonly and easily called the Arkansas Blue Star or Thread-Leaf Blue Star. This amazing wild flower, a native to the Midwest, sports delicate, willow-like foliage that is remarkably soft to the touch. It grows in compact mounds, blooming with soft-blue star-like flowers in the spring that are often overwhelmed by the light green prolific foliage. The real show happens in the fall when the singularly attractive feathery leaves turn a brilliant, showy, golden yellow. Hubrichtii was chosen the PPA’s (Perennial Plant Association) Plant of the Year for 2011! Whether planted en masse for spectacular impact or planted singularly to bring fall color to a deciduous bed, this one is a keeper! Each 3-inch pot contains one Hubrichtii Amsonia plant.
