Lonicera Plants

The Lonicera plant is a twining, vining plant, with 20 of the 180 species native to the Northern Hemisphere, particularly to North America. Often called Honeysuckle or Woodbine, you may also hear them referred to as Japanese or Chinese honeysuckle, coral honeysuckle or trumpet honeysuckle. The heady, sweet aromatic qualities of this blooming vine are its most outstanding feature.

Lonicera, pronounced loh-NIS-er-a, actually has nothing to do with either the common name or the fantastic fragrance. It is unromantically named for the 16th century German botanist and author, Adam Lonitzer. Honeysuckle is the more commonly used and definitely more attractive and romantic name. Once you’ve inhaled the fragrance of honeysuckle, you will find it forever etched in your memory, as will the hummingbirds and honeybees frequenting your garden when these vines are in bloom.
