Australis Baptisia Plants produce bushy clumps of long stems topped with foot-long spikes of pea like flowers that are decked out in shades of violet blue. These nectar rich flowers attract butterflies and bees, while the dried seed pods attract wild birds. It is equally attractive for fresh cuttings or dried for more lasting arrangements. Blue false indigo is an excellent choice for sunny garden spots in beds and borders where some structure is needed. Baptisia tolerate poor soils, clay soil and even rocky soil, and they are drought tolerant once established. It is a Perennial Plant Association plant of the year for good reason.

Common Names: baptisia australis, blue false indigo, wild indigo, rattleweed, rattlebush, forse fly weed

Baptisia Companion Plants: Euphorbia, Rudbeckia, Saliva

Australis Baptisia Plant Care Instructions: Keep the plant well-watered for the first 4-5 weeks. After that, only water if the plant starts looking droopy. Leave the spent flowers on the plant throughout the winter as birds enjoy eating the seeds. Cut it back to around 6 inches from the ground in early spring before the new growth starts. This is also a good time to apply fertilizer for the year.

Love my plant!

I was very happy to receive my baptisia australis plant in such good condition. It is planted and growing well. Thanks everyone at GJ.

Good Plants Packaged Well

The healthy plants came promptly and in fine condition, having been packaged with care. That evening, planted them in my native prairie garden here on the farm. (Some day I hope to bring back the western meadow larks of my childhood.) To counter my black thumb, I thoroughly watered in and mulched the plants and surrounded them with chicken wire against the rabbits. After five weeks, so far, so good. Crossing my fingers—it’s up to me, now.

This beautiful Baptisia Plant was so healthy and grew so fast in it's sunny spot that I had to move it to a larger space. I'm looking forward to seeing how it does there, and enjoying it's delicate blue blossoms this coming summer! Thank You, GrowJoy!

Very Drought Tolerant

I ordered four Australis Baptisia plants from GrowJoy last spring. They were very healthy but also very spindly. I wasn't sure how they would do, but now at the end of their first growing season they have filled out very nicely and their stems have thickened and hardened off. I only lost one, which I figure isn't too bad. I didn't water them much but they have proven to be very drought tolerant. I'm looking forward to how they will look by next spring.

Positive Expectations

My Australis Baptisia Plants weren't quite as large as the Purple Smoke Baptisia Plants, byt they still arrived in great condition and were well packed. The stems were already hardened off and ready to be planted outdoors. I have great expectations for all of the Baptisia plants I purchased from GrowJoy.
