Snapdragon Flower Seeds

Snapdragon Flower Seeds produce one of the most recognizable flowers on the planet. A largely popular tender perennial, they are most often grown as an annual, though in the past they were not high on the list as a cut flower, their life short-lived after being pollinated by bumblebees, the blossoms dropping once that happened. This phenomenon was called “shattering”. The newest cultivars are “shatter-proof”, making these fanciful spikes a great cut flower choice, just one more reason to plant snapdragons, once grown by your mother, and her mother and her mother….

Snapdragon, the botanical name being Antirrhinum majus, pronounced an-tih-RYE-num MAY-jus, is quite a mouthful, the more common name of Snapdragon all that is needed for anyone to know what particular annual flower you are talking about. This is one of those flowers you will always remember from your youth, many parents planting it based solely upon their own childhoods and the smiles these whimsical, colorful and fun flowers can bring to a child’s face. Snapdragons, so named due to the resemblance to a fantastical dragon’s face, the toothless jaws opening and then snapping shut when the side of the blossom is squeezed just so, are aromatic and multihued. They are sometimes also known as Dog’s Mouth, Lion’s Mouth and Toad’s Mouth. As with any blooming plant, those pretty blossoms take a lot of energy and good nutrition. Monthly feeding is strongly suggested for the prettiest and strongest blossoms. We recommend Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Our ‘Bells Mix’ Snapdragon Flower seed is a concoction of seven randomly selected colors: lavender, pink, purple, red, rose, white and one bicolor, purple and white. Making it easy to create fantastically colored beds and borders, these dwarfish plants can also be grown in containers. The Bell Series has exceptional basal branching and produces more “open” blossoms than many others, these blossoms said to resemble butterflies in flight. Six colors are included in this mixture, in two shades of pink, red, orange, yellow and white, all of which are bicolored to one extent or another.
