Silene Flower Seeds

Silene Flower Seeds are a large genus with more than 500 annuals, biennials and perennials with habitats ranging from low lying plain’s meadows to mountainous areas in the Northern Hemisphere, but most commonly naturalized in Mediterranean regions.

Silene, pronounced sye-LEE-nee, is most often called Catchfly or Royal Catchfly, depending upon the sub-species, though it is also called None-So-Pretty, a quite apropos name. The name catchfly is due to the fact it produces a sticky substance at the base of its blossoms, this gooey stuff trapping small insects and flies, making silene an effective, natural and pleasantly appealing insecticide. You can plant them in containers or in the garden, silene preferring a sunny, well-drained bed or container. Amending your planting site or container with sand will help with drainage if it is a problem. As with most blooming plants, good nutrition will result in the best performance, especially for those plants grown in containers where plants will more quickly use up the available nutrients. We recommend Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Silene seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.

Deep Rose Silene Flower Seeds

Price $2.54

Our ‘Deep Rose’ Silene Flower seed is called Silene schafta or Catch-fly or Catchfly. Having rosy-magenta blossoms, Silene schafta may also be called None-so-Pretty, the reason being quite obvious, or Alpine Campion, due to its location in the wild. This demure looking little perennial is actually quite hardy, trailing nicely from containers, over retaining walls and around those special rocks in your rock garden, the five petals of each blossom being well-separated and squared-off, looking somewhat like a pinwheel, and surrounding a small rigid center atop yellowy green foliage. Try planting these with Sedum for amazing contrast and similar growing requirements! Really stunning together! Approximately 100 seeds per each hand-filled packet.
