Sempervivum Seeds

Sempervivum Flower Seeds produce a hardy perennial, succulent in nature, bearing stylish rosettes and in ideal growing conditions, tall, beautiful blossoms. You may recognize the Latin connotations of its name, “semper”, meaning always and “vivius”, meaning living. Drought and heat tolerant, requiring little maintenance, sempervivum actually prefers sandy, rocky, poor soil, as long as it is well-drained.

Sempervivum, pronounced sem-pur-VYE-vum, is also known most commonly as Hens and Chicks, but may also be known as Houseleeks or Liveforever. The main rosette, the Hen, of each plant produces tons of smaller rosettes (the Chicks) on creeping vines, the smaller rosettes taking root and becoming a Hen, going on to produce many more Chicks…and the cycle repeats itself. The blossoms, when they appear, rise on a 1-foot tall stem, somewhat resemble a daisy and are considered quite pretty, unlike the flowers of many plants grown primarily for their foliage.

As with any blooming plant, those pretty blossoms take a lot of energy and good nutrition.  We recommend feeding in the spring and again in midsummer, the extra nutrition in the spring helping as they come out of winter and the midsummer feeding providing the nutrition for the blossoms. Our customers use Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Sempervivum seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.
