Schizanthus Flower Seeds

Schizanthus Flower Seeds are most often called Butterfly Flower, and should definitely not be confused with the Butterfly Bush, which is a perennial bush with flowers nothing like Schizanthus and is not even related to Butterfly Flower, which is a beautiful annual. Also having a more poetic name, Poor Man’s Orchid, the blossoms are large and showy, resembling colorful butterflies, orchids or really dressed up petunias, which they are actually related to; that and tomatoes.

Schizanthus, pronounced skizz-ANN-thus, is a Chilean native, thriving in cool weather climates, blooming in late winter and early spring in frost free climates and showing off their good looks to perfection in regions where cool temperatures are prevalent in the spring and summer. The foliage is finely cut and ferny-looking, upon which prolific clusters of flowers bloom, the weight of the blossoms tending to give a tumbled appearance. Schizanthus actually prefers to grow in a “root bound” environment; therefore is grown quite often in containers. In the garden, a little overcrowding is appreciated, so the recommended distance apart is just 12-inches. Regardless of where you plant though, good drainage is a must, as is healthy, regular nutrition, especially for those plants grown in containers where the available nutrients are more limited. We recommend Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Schizanthus seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.
