Rhamnus frangula Plants

Rhamnus frangula plants are also commonly known as Buckthorn, Glossy Buckthorn or Alder Buckthorn. There are many different varieties, some of which are considered invasive in some states, though newer varieties are being developed that will not naturalize easily and therefore will not be considered undesirable.

Rhamnus frangula, pronounced RAM-nus FRANG-gu-la, is a large deciduous shrub. Its fast growth and upright habit can result in its appearing to be a small tree fairly quickly. The summer leaves are a deep green and are 1” to 3” in length and oval-shaped. The autumn foliage turns yellow before the Buckthorn drops its leaves for the winter. Some varieties produce a berry-like fruit up to 1/3” in diameter that tends to be red, maturing to black. When fruiting this shrub can be quite showy and will add exceptional fall color.

Fine Line Rhamnus frangula Plant

Price $15.90

The Fine Line® Rhamus frangula, a.k.a. Fine Line Buckthorn, is unlike many Buckthorn varieties that are considered invasive. This particular cultivar produces very few fruit, none of which have proved to be viable, which means it will not spread or seed where you don’t want it to. Growing upright, similar to 'Columnaris' but having attractive, feathery foliage, similar to 'Aspenifolia', you can use it along a narrow hedgerow as a privacy screen or as a background accent. The narrow growth habit has shown to be perfect for framing and accenting arbors, windows or entranceways.
