Kniphofia plants produce flowerheads that can reach a thrilling 5-foot in height and though the leaves are similar to a lily, the blooms Kniphofia produces do not resemble that delicate flower at all. Hummingbirds absolutely LOVE this plant. Kniphofia, pronounced nip-HOFF-ee-uh, uvaria is also commonly known as the Red Hot Poker due to the shape and appearance of its blossoms. Also called Torch Lily, the Flame Flower or Tritoma there are many varieties in widely varying shades of red, orange and yellow. Most gardeners recommend growing Knifhofia in front of an evergreen background or where the whole plant can be seen in order to take full advantage of the dramatic display. They are extremely drought tolerant so becoming ever more popular with gardeners who wish to conserve water. You’ll want to leave the foliage for winter protection, mulching the base in colder climates, but cut the foliage back to 3-inches in the spring. Deadheading is believed to increase the number of blossoms. Read about our Kniphofia plant guarantee on our Satisfaction page. |
