Euonymus Plants

Euonymus plants can be either deciduous, meaning they drop their leaves in a dormant season, or evergreen, meaning their foliage stays intact throughout the year, providing color even with snow on the ground. The deciduous selections, such as the ‘Burning Bush’ varieties, produce astounding fall colors, while ‘Euonymus Fortuneis’ are evergreen shrubs that often trail or climb, some even possessing aerial rootlets, just as ivy does.

Euonymus, (pronounced eu-on-y-mus) the Burning Bush shrub is, sometimes called Spindle bush or Spindle tree, only due to the fact that the wood from some species was traditionally used for making spindles for spinning wool. Euonymus Fortunei, on the other hand, is most often called Wintercreeper or Fortune’s Spindle. Both are hardy and easy to grow, and are mostly grown for their foliage; their flowers are normally inconspicuous and appear in small groups in shades of green and yellow, while the fruit will be quite showy, displaying pink to red hues, a four- or five-petalled pod and a bright, reddish-orange seed covering, upon opening, that fruit-eating songbirds will be attracted to.
