Dichondra Plants

Dichondra is grown as both an annual and a perennial plant, used in some areas of the country to create stunningly thick and gorgeous lawn-scapes. Growing well in warm, temperate climates, dichondra will also withstand temperatures as low as 20-25°F with only slight browning.

Dichondra, pronounced dye-KON-druh, is also called Asian Ponyfoot, due to the shape of its leaves, which are sometimes compared to clover. In all actuality, the leaf is only one lobe, not three- or four-lobed, rising from a tiny slender stalk and wrapping around that stalk, forming a rounded hoof-like shaped leaf. First grown for its striking, dark, intense green color, other cultivars have given way to more creative uses. Warmer areas of the country grow Asian Pony Foot as a groundcover, while colder climates use it as an annual filler in containers and along borders. Dichondra is easy-to-grow, drought tolerant, highly attractive and is deer resistant.
