Delphinium Plants produce elegant floral spikes that burst into color each spring and are one of the earliest blooming perennials. A bit of trivia that you might not know is that Delphinium means “Little Dolphin” in Greek. It seems the imaginative ancient Greeks saw miniscule dolphins in the shapes of the flowers. In Greek mythology dolphins were associated with mercy and were highly esteemed, as were these flowers. Delphinium, pronounced del-FIN-ee-um, commonly called Larkspur, is a favorite flower for cuttings. Removing the spent flower stalks will encourage more growth and more prolific blooming. As with most delphiniums, a moist, rich soil is needed and though they prefer full sun, they will also thrive in partially shady areas providing 4 to 6 hours of direct sun a day. The Larkspur attracts hummingbirds and butterflies and are deer and rabbit resistant. Read about our Delphinium plant guarantee on our Satisfaction page. |
