Bougainvillea plants produce vibrant colors on special leaves called bracts, which change color while maturing and surround the tiny white flowers that are lovingly caressed by the colorful bracts. These papery looking bracts are what have given rise to the nickname, Paper Flower. The Bougainvillea plant, pronounced Boo-Gan-Veel-ee-uh, was first discovered in 1768 by a French Admiral of the same name. This Brazilian native is one of the most popular and highly regarded tropical in the world. Its evergreen, woody vine can grow up to 20' in a season, but look their best when kept to 18-20" in length. Bougainvillea plants are drought-resistant and perform beautifully in low water landscaping (xeriscape). Extra caution is warranted when removing the plant from the pot for transplanting; the root system is extremely fragile, though once established, it is quite hardy.
