Artemisia Plants

Artemisia Plants are a bushy ornamental perennial grown for its feathery, aromatic foliage. This plant is carefree in the garden and smells great in herbal wreaths.

Artemisia, pronounced ar-the-MEEZ-ee-uh, also commonly called Wormwood or Silver Sage, has a characteristic fragrance that is useful for making sprays that repel insects. Its roots give off a secretion that inhibits the growth of surrounding weeds. In addition to repelling bugs and weeds, it is deer resistant. Artemisia plants grow best in full sun with well drained soil; they do not tolerate moist soil. Water moderately—and only in the mornings. For best results, prune in the spring, with new growth.

Powis Castle Artemisia Plant

Price $5.30

The 'Powis Castle' Artemisia Plant is fragrant, soft to touch, great to look at, and extremely drought tolerant. The silvery coloration is consistent with other Silver Sage plants, the foliage being the reason to grow this plant, rather than the somewhat insignificant blossoms. In fact, some gardeners will quickly snip the blooms from this Wormwood plant, preferring to direct the plant's energy to producing even more luxuriously pretty foliage.

Silver Mound Artemisia Plant

Price $5.30

Our 'Silver Mound' Artemisia Plant is grown almost exclusively for its silvery foliage, which has led to its other nicknames, such as Ghost Plant and Silver Sage. Forming a fairly low, nicely rounded cushion of silvery, fern-like leaves, this is the ideal border plant, especially for dry, sunny spots, though if you live in a zone with humid summers, Silver Mound will benefit from a hard clipping back as the ball-like flowers first start to appear, the new foliage growing quickly to replace what’s been cut. Dividing Silver Mound every two to three years in either the spring or fall will maintain its vigor, keeping it looking fresh and manicured, and maintaining this perennial for many years. Fans of this drought tolerant, deer resistant and fragrant plant never tire of its silvery beauty.
