In the cypress family, Arborvitae is an evergreen coniferous tree. Native to northeastern North America it has fan-like branches with scaly leaves and a ropy appearance. Compared to similar conifers, Arborvitae is a small tree, growing to between 30 and 65-feet, though a sparse few have been measured at 98-feet tall. The bark is reddish-brown and peels in strips which make exceptional fire tinder. Arborvitae also bears pine cones, but they are small, only being about 1/3 to 1/2-inch long and are most noticeable when growing in large clumps. Arborvitae (pronounced ahr-ber vahy-tee) is also called Wintergreen, Eastern Arborvitae, American Aborvitae or White Cedar. This evergreen enjoys humidity and though it prefers moist, deep, loamy soil, it is quite adaptable to poor soils, even rocky and clay bases. Arborvitae is also tolerant of both acidic and alkaline soils and doesn’t seem to mind heat, drought and pollution, the latter of which means that it will also thrive in cities or urban areas.
