Little Dorrit Sunflower Flower Seeds

You will have the best results sowing your sunflower flower seeds directly into the garden rather than starting them in seed trays. Sunflowers have a long taproot; it grows quickly and can become stunted and blocked even in peat pots, killing the plant before it’s ready to transplant. Even in areas with a short growing season, it is best to sow directly into the garden. Sunflowers can tolerate a chill or two, so it is safe to plant them a couple of weeks before the last expected frost date for your area. Sow them 1 to 2-inches deep, 2-inches being best when planting in sandy soil. Space the seeds about 6-inches apart, cover and keep consistently moist until the seeds sprout, usually in 7 to 10 days, though it may be longer if you’ve planted them earlier. When the second set of leaves (the true leaves) appear, thin the plants to about 2-feet apart, depending upon the variety you’ve planted and if you are planning for seed production. Most varieties will mature and develop seeds in 80 to 120 days. Sowing a new row every 2 or 3 weeks will ensure blossoms up until the first frost, at which point you can leave some of the flower heads to feed the winter migratory birds and local residents, like the squirrels.
