Hypoestes Flower Seeds

Hypoestes Flower Seeds produce a plant most often grown for its foliage, its flowers considered by most to be insignificant in comparison. Also called the Polka Dot Plant, Freckle Face Plant, Flamingo Plant, Freckle Plant and Measles Plant, this annual is grown as a bedding plant outside as much as it is grown as a house plant. Not seeming to mind artificial light, it does not do well in full sunlight, the leaves losing their distinctive markings and tending to turn light green if getting too much sunlight. A native of Madagascar, it is considered slightly invasive in the most temperate regions of parts of the world, most notably in Costa Rica.

The Hypoestes, pronounced hye-PESS-teez, will also get leggy unless you pinch and pinch and…. That being said, regular pinching of your polka dot plant will result in a quite beautiful, bushy, well-shaped plant and is a very easy way to de-stress during a hectic day, though some might call it “work”. You can even talk to your plant while “pinching”, though try to keep the stress out of your voice. Keeping a smile on your face will transmit warm fuzzies to your freckle face plant, regardless who you are railing at as you pinch their head off (oops, pinch the new growth)! Also requiring consistent watering, letting your polka dot plant dry out will result in the defoliation of the stems closest to the soil, also resulting in a plant that will not look half as nice. Consistency is key to a happy, healthy and pretty-looking hypoestes. Easy-to-grow, both indoors and out, your hypoestes will benefit from regular feeding. We recommend a water-soluble, slow-release, natural fertilizer, such as Jungle Flora or Espoma® Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for flowering plants.

Splash Select Mix Hypoestes Flower Seeds

Our ‘Splash Select Mix’ Hypoestes Flower Seed produces a varied mixture of Splash Select Red, Pink and White, all of which have been bred for easy germination and higher heat tolerance. Having a rich, dark green base color, the splashes of red, pink and white are that much more striking, as is the highly noticeable venation of that incredibly luxuriant green. This shade lover’s rosette-type, low growth makes it ideal for filling in beds and containers or to grace the sides of a shady walkway. Approximately 50 seeds per each hand-filled packet.

Our ‘Splash Select Pink’ Hypoestes Flower Seed yields richly colored green foliage liberally splashed and veined with pretty pink. A shade-loving foliage plant, the blossoms grow on racemes and are quite small; some calling them insignificant. They will, however, produce seeds which will readily self-sow in the most temperate climes. Pinching and consistent moisture is the trick to having incredibly showy polka dot plants, an exercise, that to most, is quite satisfying! Approximately 50 seeds per each hand-filled packet.

Our ‘Splash Select Red’ Hypoestes Flower Seed produces showy foliage with deeply pink, sometimes almost red, splashes of color and vigorous venation on a luxuriantly green plant. Performing its best in the shade, the polka dot plant will tolerate morning sun well, resulting in more intense coloration, but will suffer if subjected to the afternoon sun in all but the coolest climates.
