Four o’ Clock Flower Seeds

Four o’ Clock Flower Seeds produce a shrub like plant with trumpet-shaped, highly fragrant flowers in a wide range of colors. Hummingbirds particularly love Four o’ Clocks, as do bees and butterflies. Gardeners grow them for their amazingly aromatic presence, their ability to grow in just about any soil under any conditions and the ease with which you can control their reseeding habit. The seed appears as each flower falls, looking like a black peppercorn. You can deadhead prior to the seed appearing or easily pick them off the ground if you prefer them not to reseed. On the other hand, you can let nature take its course and enjoy the everlasting beauty of these beautiful blossoms as they increase year after year.

Four o’ Clocks are also called Mirabilis jalapa, pronounced meer-AB-ill-iss jah-LAH-pah, and is an annual in all but the most southern regions of the U.S., though their ability to reseed themselves means that you will usually have them return the following year. In the border states, heavy mulching for winter may allow them to survive. Four o ’Clocks produce a carrot-like tuber that can extend 2-feet underground, making this prolific bloomer incredibly drought tolerant, but difficult to transplant.  As their name implies, they open late in the afternoon, though Four o’ Clock may be early in most climes. They actually respond to temperature changes, meaning that if the day is cooler, the trumpet-shaped blossoms will open sooner, rather than later. During the height of the summer it may be 6 or 8 o’clock before they open. They provide amazing tropical fragrance as evening approaches and through the night. As always, perennial bloomers will benefit from regular feeding. A water-soluble fertilizer tends to work best, as it slowly releases the nutrients over a period of time. We recommend Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, , both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Four o' Clock seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.
