Crown Vetch Flower Seeds produce highly vegetative plants with pink, lavender and white flowers arising above lush, fern-like foliage. First imported to the U.S. from Europe, this creeper, spreading through rhizomes, was first used as erosion control on hilly farmland, and then along the highways and byways of America. With the ability to become invasive, it is not recommended for lawns or formal beds, but for areas that will benefit from a flowering ground cover that requires little care and will eventually be weed-free as the Crown Vetch takes over.
Crown Vetch, pronounced just as it is spelled, is drought tolerant and easy to care for once established. Each branch of leaves closely resembles the growth pattern of a Boston fern, though the leaves are oval, rather than pointed, and can spread out and grow up to 6-feet, putting down new roots, which form nitrogen-producing rhizomes, which allow for self-fertilization and its creeping habit. The blossoms will stand on stems rising up to 6-inches above the foliage. This perennial will benefit from a biannual feeding, though nitrogen is not a necessity as it produces its own. Flowering will most often occur between May and August, though can be extended in more temperate climes. For the best performance while blooming we recommend supplemental feeding with Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are organically rich and formulated for blooming plants.
