Centranthus Flower Seeds

Our Centranthus Flower seeds yield a hummingbird magnet! One of the easiest to grow perennials, Centranthus is more commonly called Jupiter’s Beard with the red variety, Centranthus ruber, also being known as Red Valerian. Its size, growing 24 to 32-inches tall, makes it ideal for the middle of the garden and is an exceptional cut flower.

Centranthus, pronounced sen-TRAN-thus, are not picky about where they grow and are avid self-seeders. If you want to keep them contained, pluck the flowers before they go to seed. On the other hand, if you like things ‘au naturale’, let them go to seed and see what happens. If you don’t love it, the hummingbirds and butterflies definitely will! Fairly tolerant of neglect and drought, once established, if the plants stop blooming because of the heat, cut them back by 1/3 to 1/2 to encourage another blooming period towards the end of summer and into the fall. As with all bloomers, they will perform their best on a regular feeding schedule with a supplement specifically designed for blooming plants. We recommend Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are organically rich and specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Centranthus seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.

Our ruber ‘Coccineus’ Centranthus Flower Seed is more commonly called Red Jupiter’s Beard and sometimes referred to as Red Valerian. Highly fragrant, they will attract both hummingbirds and beneficial pollinators to your yard. Free flowering, except for exceptionally hot summers, you should have blossoms throughout the whole season. For first year blooms, they need long day length, so our northernmost neighbors may have to wait for the second year. Jupiter’s Beard makes an exceptionally long-lasting cut flower and readily reseeds if you allow it. This perennial is a favorite for novice gardeners, though experts grow it as well, just because it is so easy. Approximately 50 seeds per each hand-filled packet.
