Don’t forget to feed your trees! Trees, especially the ornamental or shade varieties, are often the last to be fed—or are not fed at all. Trees just seem to grow without much care, so we often don’t think of the importance of their nutrition…until a stiff wind topples them onto the neighbors’ fence or roof. Small Trees can be fed by sprinkling Espoma Tree-tone around the base of the tree. This is the area under and slightly beyond the spread of branches. It should be applied as if shaking salt or pepper. Large Trees are best fed by placing Tree-tone in the ground near the root system. This puts it closer to where it is needed and encourages the roots to grow down and out, rather than working their way to the surface in search of food. See the directions below. Espoma Tree-tone Feeding directions: - Make a series of holes under the branch spread starting 1/3 of the distance out from the trunk and extending an equal distance beyond the branch line.
- Holes should be 2 to 3 inches in diameter, 2 to 3 feet apart, and 12 to 18 inches deep. They can be made with an iron bar or, more preferably, with an auger.
- Divide the recommended quantity of Tree-tone evenly among the holes.
- Re-fill the holes with soil and water thoroughly.
The amount of Tree-tone required is determined by the caliper or diameter of the trunk, which on medium and large trees should be measured at a point 4 feet above the ground. - Small Trees - Up to 3 inch trunk diameter - 8 cups per tree
- Medium Trees - 3 to 6 inch diameter - 8-11 cups per tree
- Large Trees - Over 6 inch diameter - 9-16 cups per tree
- Potted Trees - Apply at 1/4 of the above rates
