The Clemson Spineless, a.k.a. Ladies Fingers, produces dark, emerald green pods that are only slightly grooved and that do not have spines. An All-American Winner, this variety is at its peak when 2.5-3 inches long. A favorite of gardeners, this variety has a velvet-like texture, rather than harder spines, but can still cause skin irritation, so gloves are recommended for harvest. Okra prefers well-drained soil and will not do well at all with soggy feet. Use a cultivator to work the soil well to encourage drainage. Rich, organic or composted soil won’t require additional fertilization, but if you know your soil may be lacking, then try some of our Neptune’s Harvest Fish & Seaweed Blend to insure a healthy harvest.
