Tomatoes are a good source of Potassium, Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Lycopene, nutrients sought to ward off heart disease, and the antioxidants believed to prevent many kinds of cancer.
Tomato plants are divided into two types: Determinates bear most of their fruit at the same time while indeterminates continue to produce fruit throughout the growing season. We recommend using a growing support for indeterminate plants.
There are two products that will speed up your harvest time and also increase the size of your tomato harvest. Mulching with red plastic holds the heat in the soil and encourages rapid growth and development of tomatoes and using Kozy-Koats produces an earlier harvest.
Feeding tomato plants with Tomato-tone at three different times during the growing cycle will also produce better tomatoes. Feed the plant when transplanting, when fruits are golf-ball sized, and again three weeks later. Water thoroughly and regularly; container plants may need daily watering.
Fruit should be firm and full-colored before harvesting. If temperatures exceed 90 degrees, harvest sooner (as color starts to develop) and ripen indoors, away from sunlight. For more helpful information on avoiding tomato growing problems, read our Top Tomato Plant Problems article.
We recommend using the Tomato Grower’s Soil Test Kit to grow the largest and best tasting tomatoes. All of our potted tomato plants are guaranteed to arrive alive and ready to plant.
