Sedum, commonly called Stonecrop, is very easy to grow and is an ideal perennial for spaces that get infrequent watering. Sedum makes an excellent border plant and works well in rock gardens. Butterflies and hummingbirds are attracted to the flowers and the winter seed heads attract different birds, including finches and chickadees.
Sedums are succulents, characterized by fleshy leaves to store the water they need to grow. They are very well adapted to thrive with almost no additional water, making them great plants for xeriscaping. They are not susceptible to diseases and few pests pay attention to them; however, deer love them.
Extreme heat and lack of sun will cause Sedum to get a bit leggy, and overwatering will cause the stonecrop plant to turn a lighter shade and possibly die. Pruning the plants back in early July will encourage them to get bushier and to grow more sturdy.
Sedum flowers bloom only once, late in the season. They do not need deadheading and often look good right through the winter. After several years, the center of Sedum plants will show signs of dying out; division is needed to keep the plant vigorous.
We guarantee our potted Sedum plants to arrive healthy.
