Hummingbirds are one of the most interesting and fun of all backyard visitors. They tend to be quite shy, but once they are used to your presence and know that you will not hurt them, they will be much more outgoing, sometimes even hovering in front of your face as if they are talking to you. Some people have reported that they even alight on their hands or shoulders while freshening or filling their feeders. A little patience and quiet, accompanied by slow movements, goes a long way to making hummingbird friends.

If this is the first year that you have put out a feeder, it may take a little while for the ‘word’ to spread and visitors to your feeder may be sporadic; but keep your nectar fresh and readily available and by the end of the season you will have a plethora of visitors to your feeders. It is also believed that these little travelers will return time and again to one location where they are happy, often raising young in that location. You may find that, year after year, you have to increase the number of feeders that you have and keep them filled more often, but the small amount of time that this takes is well worth the aerobatic and colorful display that these little creatures exhibit. It is also recommended that you have multiple feeders separated by a few feet or more. The males of the species can be quite territorial and this feeder separation allows for more peaceful cohabitation. We also suggest you purchase an ant guard for each feeder. Hummingbirds will not eat from feeders that are inhabited by ants and these inexpensive ant guards will insure that your feeders remain clean and attractive to your dinner guests.
