Watermelons are high in Vitamins A, B6 and C, as well as fiber and potassium. Watermelons are also low in calories and high in nutrition. They contain more lycopene per serving than tomatoes.

Watermelons are a warm-season fruit and can be grown in all parts of the country. If you are a northern gardener, mulching with Black Plastic Film will greatly benefit your melons by warming the soil beneath the plastic.

If you purchase a seedless variety; be aware they cannot pollinate themselves, you must inter-plant with a seeded melon. This way the bees from the seeded melon will pollinate the seedless melon. If you do not interplant, you will not have any fruit on your seedless plant.

When your watermelon is ripe they will have the following characteristics�which takes the guess work out of harvesting.

The light green, curly tendrils on the stem near the point of attachment of the melon usually turn brown and dry
The surface color of the fruit turns dull
The skin becomes resistant to penetration by the thumbnail and is rough to the touch
The bottom of the melon (where it sits on the soil) turns from light green to a yellowish color.

The main pest of melons is the Cucumber Beetle, to control simply apply organic Diatomaceous Earth.
