Corn

Sweet Corn is an excellent source of Lutein, which is good for healthy vision and is beneficial to your cardiovascular system. Corn also adds Folate to our diets, which is necessary in both children and adults for healthy growth of red blood cells and to prevent anemia. Freshly grown corn averages only about 77 calories per ear, while being rich in Magnesium, Phosphorous and especially high in Potassium. It is also very high in Vitamins A and C, Antioxidants that help to prevent a wide range of diseases and ailments. White and Yellow varieties are almost identical except that the white varieties do not contain quite as much Lutein and Vitamin A

Sweet Corn grows best in fertile, well-drained soil in direct sunlight. We recommend mixing Espoma Plant-tone in the soil when preparing the planting bed. We also advise planting in shorter rows or blocks, rather than in longer rows. Sweet Corn is wind pollinated, so these shorter, blockier plots will pollinate best. Corn can also cross-pollinate easily, so unless you want to experiment or don’t mind the end result being a surprise, we suggest that you separate different varieties by at least 50 feet or stagger the planting by 14 days, which will also provide for a longer harvest season in most growing areas. You should fertilize again when the plants reach about 2-foot in height. This is quickly accomplished by sprinkling one cup of fertilizer to each 10-feet of garden row and then watering well. Adequate moisture is particularly necessary during the bloom (as silk is growing) and while the kernels are forming and filling on the cob.

The best gauge on when to harvest your corn is when the silk turns brown and the tip of the cob has become blunt. This should be the time of peak flavor and appearance. You can also watch our video on How to Pick Sweet Corn; it demonstrates the easiest way to harvest the cob without damaging the stalk.
