Get Get a jump-start on next year’s strawberries by planting in the fall. Fall-planted strawberry plants do not require waiting a year before picking; simply plant and enjoy fresh-picked strawberries next spring.
Strawberries love sun and should be planted in an area that receives maximum exposure. They will do best in evenly moist but well-drained soil.
Once plants arrive, soak them in water for 10 minutes before planting. When planting, place deep enough so the soil from the pot is even with the garden soil level.
Water generously and ensure new plants do not dry out for the first 2 weeks after planting.
Immediately after the harvest season is complete (or after the first frost for first-year plants), mow and thin beds and apply fertilizer. We recommend Espoma Plant-tone.
Fall-planted strawberries must be mulched in the fall to prevent winter-weather injury. Repeated freezing and thawing of the ground can heave un-mulched plants out of the soil. Straw makes ideal mulching material. Fall-planted strawberries can also be planted through plastic mulch. Remove mulch in the spring when plants show new growth. Loose mulch may be raked into the spaces between rows, and re-applied to mounds whenever there is a threat of frost.
Strawberry beds are usually productive for three to five harvest years, and then will need to be replanted with fresh crowns.
If you want a smaller strawberry patch, try our Pyramid Space Saver Garden. It works well with strawberry plants.
