Asters are a quintessential fall blooming perennial that create a beautiful array of colors in your yard or garden. There are not many perennials that display such fine autumn blooms as asters. Butterflies thrive on their nectar when embarking upon or returning from their migratory journeys. An added bonus: Asters are deer resistant.

Aster Plant Care:

Space aster plants 18 to 24 inches apart.

Plant asters in a location with plenty of soil drainage and air movement. Soil drainage can be improved by adding compost, peat, or other organic matter.

We recommend using a liquid fertilizer on a monthly basis. Do not fertilize asters once they are in bloom.

Pruning keeps plants compact and bushy. Pinch back asters when new growth is 3 to 5 inches long. Use your thumb and index finger to remove about one half of the new growth on each new shoot. (Grass clippers or shears may be used instead, if you like.) Repeat this practice whenever new shoots reach 3 to 5 inches. Stop pinching back by mid-July.

Do not cut back old flowers or stems until the following spring.

Light mulch, such as straw or evergreen boughs, can be applied after the ground freezes to protect roots.

In the spring, cut away any old aster stems (a rake works just fine) and carefully remove the mulch.

Asters can be divided in the spring after the second year of flowering. Discard the old center portion of the root mass. Separate young offshoots, and plant them 18 to 24 inches apart.

More so than other plants, asters in full flower are likely to attract insects, including bees. For this reason, it is wise not to place asters near patios or other social-gathering areas.
