Worm Composting

Worm composting is an alternative compost method that utilizes redworms, red wigglers or night crawlers to break down waste and provide an exceptional organic fertilizer. Worm composting also creates a liquid “tea” that some gardeners prefer to use as opposed to a solid organic compound and means that you will always have a ready supply of worms for fishing, just one other relaxing pastime that some might even rank above gardening.

The Worm Hive has been designed to facilitate the harvesting of nutrient rich worm castings in a quantity conducive to a large garden or landscape area, in the minimum amount of space. Each layer consists of a wooden box, open on the top and on which the bottom is 1/4” mesh aluminum hardware screen. Made to stack inside one another, the top has a handled lid with air holes to assure air flow from bottom to top. The hive sits on a 4-legged wooden frame that has a fine aluminum mesh to prevent escaping worms and which allows the worm “tea” to be collected in the provided plastic catch basin. Then, as the bedding and food scraps in the bottom box are composted, add new food scraps and bedding to the next box up. The worms will naturally migrate upwards to the new food supply, allowing you to remove the bottom box with the worm castings, empty it, and place it on the top. Voila! The top box will dry out and the process continues! How simple is that?
