Scabiosa Flower Seeds

Scabiosa Flower Seeds are more commonly known under the name Pincushion Flowers, the flower heads comprised of a myriad of small blossoms, all of which have wispy stamens poking out, making the entire flower head resemble a pincushion. The effect is even more pronounced as the flowers dry on the stalk and go to seed, the seeds themselves looking like miniature shuttlecocks, or badminton birdies.

Scabiosa, pronounced skab-ee-OH-suh, is also miscalled “scabosia”. There are both annual and perennial forms, the location, method and timing of the planting determining whether or not your Pincushion Flowers will grow and flower, and where you live determining your planting of annual or perennial. Some scabiosa can grow up to 4-feet in height, so be aware of the cultivar you are growing and plan accordingly. Native to the fynbos, or fine bush, of South Africa, some forms of Scabiosa grow wild in acidic, nutrient-poor soil and in a climate with cold wet winters and hot dry summers. Much feeding is not a necessity, but if the pH of your soil is highly alkaline, it should probably be amended with aluminum sulfate or gypsum to increase the acidity, though this can be a slow process. While amending your soil and until the pH has undergone the required changes, try a half-strength feeding with Espoma® Holly-tone® on a regular schedule. An organic plant food, this is the ideal nutrition for acid-loving plants.

Each order of our fresh Scabiosa seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.
