Strobilanthes Plants

The Strobilanthes plant family has somewhere around 250 species. Many of these are found in India and most of them have an unusual flowering pattern, ranging from blooming annually to blooming in a 16-year cycle. The flowers on almost all of these will be a stunning blue or purplish-blue and were used in ancient times to produce indigo dye. Strobilanthese kunthiana, also called Neelarkurinji, only blooms once every 12 years and was used by the Paliyan tribal people to calculate their age!

Strobilanthes, pronounced stroh-bih-LAN-theez, is easily grown in any type of fertile soil; in order to build up lagging soil, we recommend Neptune’s Harvest or Jungle Flora, both liquid soil conditioners, completely organic and highly concentrated for cost savings. You’ll also want to plant where you have good drainage but adequate water retention and plant them in partially to fully shaded areas; hot, humid summers produce the best colors and are your reward for that extra bit of TLC.
