Sempervivum Plants

Sempervivium Plants are just one genus of over 40 species of hardy plants that are succulent in nature and which grow in clumps of rosettes and bear star-shaped flowers. Its name comes from the Latin for ‘semper’, which means always, and ‘vivius’, which means living. Sempervivum are drought and heat-tolerant and require little maintenance once established. In fact, they prefer sandy, pebbled or even rocky soil, as long as it is well-drained.

Sempervivium, pronounced sem-pur-VYE-vum, is also known as Houseleeks, Liveforever or more commonly, Hens and Chicks. They produce clusters of rosettes, which are considered the “hens”, which, in turn, bear smaller rosettes on creeping vines that are the “chicks”. Each chick can root, growing into a hen which then produces more chicks. Mostly grown for their colorful foliage and long-life, the flower is also quite pretty, rising on a 1-foot stem and being somewhat daisy-like.
