Scaevola has the rare distinction of producing 5-petalled, half-flowers on plants with serrated leaves and a trailing habit. The flowers actually look like they’ve been cut in half, and of course have given rise to numerous romantic legends. Considered a tender perennial in the most tropical climates, it is originally native to Australia, with 10 different cultivars in Hawaii.
Scaevola (pronounced skay-VO-lah) may also be known as fan-flowers, half-flowers and naupaka (in Hawaii). In fact, Scaevola is the latin term for “left-handed”, further reference to the unusual nature of these unique flowering plants. Scaevola is actually fairly drought-tolerant, but constant moisture will result in the best floral display. We recommend that you fertilize at half the strength on the label as too much fertilizer can increase the vegetative growth but inhibit flowering. Use Scaevola in hanging containers or as a flowering ground cover. Read about our Scaevola plant guarantee on our Satisfaction page. |
