Kniphofia plants produce flowerheads that can reach 5’ high and though the leaves are similar to a lily, the blooms it produces do not resemble that delicate flower at all. Hummingbirds absolutely LOVE this plant. Kniphofia (pronounced nip-HOFF-ee-uh) uvaria is also commonly known as the Red Hot Poker due to the shape and appearance of its blossoms. It is also called Torch Lily, the Flame Flower or Tritoma. There are many varieties of the Torch Lily with blossoms in varying shades of red, orange and yellow. Most gardeners recommend growing this in front of an evergreen background or where the whole plant can be seen in order to take full advantage of the dramatic display. They are extremely drought tolerant so becoming even more popular with gardeners who wish to preserve water. You’ll want to leave the foliage for winter protection, mulching the base in colder climates, but cut the foliage back to 3” in the spring. Deadheading is believed to increase the number of blossoms.
