Exochorda Plants

Exochorda Plants are a relatively small genus of flowering shrubs in the Rosaceae family, native to China and central Asia. Deciduous in nature, some varieties can grow to 15-feet in height with the width sometimes equaling or exceeding that height. Having a loose and open growth habit, the slender branches and twigs often arch beautifully though some may consider them “floppy”. The bark is a mix of browns, grays and oranges and is rather attractive. The foliage appears in early spring and is medium green with some serration and displays no autumn color change. The buds look similar to pearls; the blossoms are white, have five petals and are about 1.5-inches across; growing in clusters up to 5-inches long comprised of 6 to 10 flowers.

Exochorda (pronounced ek-so-kor'da), can be tricky to transplant so choose your site with an eye to how large it will grow and what the appearance will be five or ten years from now. Very tough once established, the pearl-bush, a more common name for exochorda, will grow best in rich, fertile, moist soils in full sun to light shade, but is widely adaptable to pH. If you find that you don’t care for the ‘au naturale’ look, the pearl bush will respond well to light pruning.
