Dicentra Plants

Dicentra Plants are an old-time perennial that you probably saw in your Grandmother’s or Great Grandmother’s garden. Looking remarkably dainty and delicate, these perennials are actually very hardy, bloom prolifically and have been greatly improved over the years, with larger flowers, a bit more fragrance, and colors that will knock your socks off.

Dicentra, pronounced dy-SEN-tra, is also called Bleeding Heart and can further be identified as Fern-Leaved Bleeding Heart or Fringed Bleeding Heart. It grows best in partial sun to full shade, even growing well amongst the pine needles under evergreen trees and shrubs; the pine needles act as a moisture-preserving mulch. Providing consistent moisture throughout the summer will prevent the Bleeding Heart from going dormant in midsummer with the onset of hotter temperatures. Your soil should be well-drained as Bleeding Hearts are intolerant of wet soil in the winter, though dry soils in the summer can also take their toll.
