Cercis Plants

The Cercis plant or shrub is a genus that includes the Chinese Redbud, the Eastern Redbud and the Western Redbud. So widely adaptable as to be grown far and wide across the nation, Cercis was first trialed by the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington D.C. in the 1980s, from seed received from China. Unlike most flowering shrubs the mauvy-pink blossoms appear along its branches before its leaves appear, most commonly blooming in March and April. Once the blooms fade, the foliage is attractive, while the height of this decorative shrub adds accent and interest to your landscape, or shadow for shade loving plant.

Preferring full sun or lightly dappled shade, Cercis, pronounced SER-sis, will grow in just about any well-drained soil, performing poorly in soils that stay wet. Cercis is fairly slow growing, has proved to be highly resistant to pests and needs little attention to establish a hardy root system able to withstand a wide range of climates and weather conditions.

Don Egolf Cercis Plant

The 'Don Egolf' Cercis Plant is a Chinese Redbud that was first discovered about 1985 at the U.S. National Arboretum at the end of a 5-year trial with seeds received from China. One cultivar was particularly noticeable, bearing gorgeously pink blossoms, literally from the ground up to the tip of the tallest branch, practically obscuring the bark in all but a few spots. Don Egolf is the first redbud cultivar to be released by the National Arboretum and is named after one of its most esteemed members. The bonus? It’s seedless, meaning that no seedlings will end up growing where you don’t want them to. Blooming along its branches before the leaves appear, as the blossoms fade, dark green deciduous foliage takes it place. Growing less than 10-feet in 15-years this is the ideal flowering “tree” for smaller yards or to fill that southern-facing corner that needs a bit of color and shade.
