The Bougainvillea, pronounced Boo-Gan-Veel-ee-uh, was first discovered in 1768 by a French Admiral of the same name. This Brazilian native is one of the most popular and highly regarded tropicals in the world. Its evergreen, woody vine can grow up to 20' in a season, but look their best when kept to 18-20" in length. The vibrant color of the Bougainvillea is actually the result of special leaves called bracts that change color while maturing and surround the tiny white flowers that are lovingly caressed by the colorful bracts. Bougainvillea are drought-resistant and perform beautifully in low water landscaping (xeriscape), though extra caution is warranted when removing the plant from the pot for transplanting. The root system is extremely fragile, but once established, the Bougainvillea is quite hardy. Read about our plant guarantee on the Shipping Policy page. |
