Amsonia Plants

The Amsonia plant is more commonly simply called Blue Star. Most of the cultivars are native to North America, though some of the 22 species also hail from Europe, Turkey, Japan, Korea and China.

Amsonia, pronounced am-SO-nee-ah, is named for Dr. John Amson, an English physician who settled in Virginia in the mid 1700s. He moved in social circles with John Clayton, a British botanist who specialized in flora of the New World, hence the plant being named after him. Only about 12 of the 22 species are widely available in specialist nurseries in the U.S., though their popularity is steadily increasing.

Once established, Amsonia plants require little care. They are drought tolerant and can withstand whole seasons of neglect. They seed sporadically, so do not become invasive, and are often unobtrusive in the wild until the uniquely spectacular fall colors appear. Then you can’t miss them!

The 'Hubrichtii Amsonia' Plant is a little known wild flower that is fast becoming a garden favorite. Pronounced ‘hew-BRIK-tee-eye’, it is more commonly and easily called the Arkansas Blue Star or Thread-Leaf Blue Star. This amazing wild flower, a native to the Midwest, sports delicate, willow-like foliage that is remarkably soft to the touch. It grows in compact mounds, blooming with soft-blue star-like flowers in the spring that are often overwhelmed by the light green prolific foliage. The real show happens in the fall when the singularly attractive feathery leaves turn a brilliant, showy, golden yellow. Hubrichtii was chosen the PPA’s (Perennial Plant Association) Plant of the Year for 2011! Whether planted en masse for spectacular impact or planted singularly to bring fall color to a deciduous bed, this one is a keeper!
