Alcea Plants

Alcea Plants produce tall, colorful spires that attract hummingbirds, butterflies and the ever elusive honey bee. This perennial’s blooms are long-lasting and flower upwards from the bottom, producing regal spires of bell-shaped blossoms.

Alcea (pronounced al-SEE-uh), also commonly called Hollyhock, is best suited for locations out of strong winds, though new dwarf varieties are being developed that are more wind-tolerant. Alcea makes an ideal backdrop against fences and walls, or as a frame for lower borders or cottage plantings. If the ideal wind-free location is not available, we recommend using plant supports to keep the stalks from breaking. Alcea are vigorous self-seeders if flower heads aren’t removed from spent blooms and can also be grown under Black Walnut trees, where most bloomers cannot.
