Portulaca Flower Seeds

Portulaca Flower Seeds are an annual available in upwards of 100 different species, also known under such common names as Sun Plant, Verdolaga, Pusley, Purslane, Pigweed, Wax Pink and Moss Rose. A native to Brazil or Europe, this trailing annual has succulent-looking, cylindrical leaves with single or double blossoms in a variety of colors, some of which are used throughout the world in the kitchen as a potherb or in salads, the flowers often being eaten raw, boiled or sautéed, though as an herb, the flavor is said to be better prior to its flowering, having a slightly lemony-flavor and mushroom-like texture.

Portulaca, pronounced por-tu-LA-ka, is widely adaptable but will prefer a sunny location, sandy soil and regular feeding.  Mostly growing 3 to 6-inches in height, some will reach grander heights, up to 12-inches. The joints of each branch are able to put down roots if contacting the soil for any length of time, the result of which is a nicely spreading, flowering carpet of tiny-leaved greenery and small, colorful flowers.  Their trailing habit also makes them ideal for hanging baskets or planters. Moss Roses are not particularly heavy feeders; in fact, they will thrive in poor soils, but when in full bloom or in containers we recommend a water soluble, slow release fertilizer to ensure the very best performance. We recommend Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants.

Each order of our fresh Portulaca seeds is filled by hand, put into a resealable plastic bag and then placed into a labeled seed packet. It is our goal to provide our customers the best in freshness and quality.
