Platycodon Flower Seeds

Platycodon Flower Seeds are also known as Balloon Flower, Bellflower, Japanese Bell Flower or Chinese Bellflower, and has also been called the Ballflower. The foliage is not particularly showy or noteworthy, though it stands up very well throughout the entire season, being pleasingly green and tidy even after the blossoms have faded. What attracts the most attention are the buds and the ballooning blossoms, and then, of course, the uncommonly beautiful, open, tulip-shaped flowers. Balloon flower lovers from the desert southwest even report fantastic results with this easy-to-grow perennial. Some gardeners even say there isn’t a perennial flower any easier to grow and care for!

Platycodon, pronounced plat-ee-KOE-dun, is commonly followed by grandiflorus (gran-dih-FLORE-us), its scientific or proper name and is originally native to East Asian countries. The most common varieties will be blue, usually singly colored, though sometimes striated with darker colors and sometimes mottled with white, though you may also see white and pink varieties with the same types of patterns. The bellflower is relatively long-lived, coming back year after year in most instances. They can, of course, use up the nutrients in the soil when they remain in one spot for an extended period, so using a good organic fertilizer is recommended.  We suggest Jungle Flora or Espoma Flower-tone®, both of which are approved for organic gardening and are safe for your family, pets, livestock and water habitats, as well as being specially formulated for blooming plants. We have had reports that bellflowers can be sensitive to chemical fertilizers, so you may want to use those with caution.

Our ‘Miss Tilly Blue’ Platycodon Flower seed is a hybrid Chinese Bellflower and is a customer favorite due to her fantastic coloration. Opening bright and vivid bluish purple, her blossoms age gracefully to soft lilac, all atop rich green, lance shaped leaves. More tender than many balloon flower cultivars, Miss Tilly Blue is considered a tender perennial in zones 6 through 8, though some gardeners give her kudos for her temerity in areas as cold as zone 4. Approximately 25 seeds per each hand-filled packet.
