Parthenocissus quin Plants

Parthenocissus quin is more properly Parthenocissus quinquefolia or known more commonly as Virginia Creeper. Often mistaken for poison ivy, Virginia Creeper is a woody vine that is native to the eastern and central United States, but can be found growing wild as far west as Utah and as far south as Texas. Grown for its colorful foliage, it is a prolific climber and has been found in the wild climbing to heights of 60-feet with a 50-foot spread, holding tenaciously to its supports with adhesive-type pads on the ends of its tendrils. Virginia Creeper is often pruned to keep it under control.

Parthenocissus quinquefolia, pronounced par-then-oh-SIS-us kwin-kweff-FOLE-lee-uh, thrives in partial shade to full sun and is widely adaptable, as well as salt tolerant. Its water needs are also varied, though Virginia Creeper requires deep weekly watering during periods of severe drought. Virginia Creeper is an exceptional erosion control for shady hills and is often used as a ground cover to hide tree stumps or other unsightly features, like fence rows.
