Organic Popcorn Seed

Many forms of Organic Popcorn Seed may also be known as maize or Indian corn. The varieties are as numerous as the colors they come in. Mostly grown for decorative purposes in the past, many U.S. gardeners are now growing their own popcorn for the purpose of popping it, as well as to grind into flour or cornmeal for use in the kitchen. A warning though: once you’ve grown your own fresh popcorn, the commercial brands just won’t compare.

Popcorn is as easy to grow as sweet corn, and is sowed directly into the garden as soon as the daytime temps reach 60°F. As most people won’t grow a lot of popcorn, it is often planted in beds where vining plants, such as legumes, squash and cucumbers can benefit from the support of the sturdy stalks. Depending upon the weather conditions, you can dry the popcorn on the stalk or harvest and hang them in a well-ventilated, dry area.

Organic Broom Ornamental Corn Seed

Organic Broom Ornamental Corn Seed is what produces those amazing maroon-red, old fashioned brooms or dried decorative arrangements. The “broom” at the top of the stalk is actually made up of thousands of red seeds on fibrous branches, growing in a stately manner to an average height of about 5.5-feet. A type of sorghum, it was used in times long gone by to make brooms and whiskbrooms, some with heads as longs as 36-inches. Nowadays it is grown more as a decorative item, the uses of which are limited only by the imagination. Our Broom Corn is a mixture of black, red, purple, brown and yellow broom fronds. Organic Earthtone Dent Ornamental Corn Seed

Organic Earthtone Dent Ornamental Corn Seed is considered an ornamental corn, but can also be used to grind into flour and to hang from posts or trees to provide sustenance for your winged visitors throughout the winter. Named for the dent in the top of the kernels, Earth Tone Dent produces large ears, 8 to 10-inches long, with kernels in a variety of shades, to include gold, orange, pink, blue, purple, green, brown, yellow and mauve. No two ears will be exactly the same! Approximately 480 seeds per 1/4# packet.

Organic Oaxacan Green Dent Ornamental Corn Seed

Organic Oaxacan Green Dent Ornamental Corn Seed has been grown for hundreds of years by the Zapotec Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico. The green kernels range in color from greenish-gold to emerald-green to bluish-green and grow in irregular rows on the cob. The “dent” in the name is the result of the dent at the top of the kernel. Most often used ornamentally or ground to make green tamales, tortillas or cornbread, Oaxacan Green Dent has a delicious nutty flavor. Approximately 350 seeds per 1/4# packet.

Organic Blue Hopi Ornamental Corn Seed

Organic Blue Hopi Ornamental Corn Seed is an ancient type of corn most often utilized to make blue colored corn meal, though it is pretty enough to be used as an ornamental for fall decorations. Used as a staple of the Hopi Indians of Northern Arizona, this is an heirloom flint corn variety. The 5-foot stalks are bushy, yielding 8 to 10-inch ears of violet-blue, smooth kernels.
